The Summer Band Concert will start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 3rd.  Join the band at the Sealy Gazebo on 24th St. and Ave. I, across from Rosenberg Library, in Galveston.  The Liberty Bell will be the theme for the patriotic program.  The band will perform the Liberty Bell March written by John Philip Sousa, and children will be invited to join the band by striking the bell at the appropriate moments.

Free Summer Hands-On Learning Camps


Galveston ISD, in partnership with Texas A&M at Galveston, the University of Texas Medical Branch, and the Dana Center at UT Austin, is sponsoring four innovative, hands-on summer learning camps in July. GISD will provide transportation from GISD campuses and housing areas north of Broadway.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided. High school students can earn one Science Credit for UTMB and TAMUG camps.

GALVESTON — The assistant principal at Angleton High School has been hired to lead Ball High School next year.

William Dean Blair, a high school principal for 12 years, has experience in boosting state standardized test scores. Every campus where he’s worked as an administrator has earned a recognized or exemplary rating by the Texas Education Agency.

FREE Mammograms Available In Galveston County



Galveston County and Cities – D’Feet Breast Cancer Inc. and the Galveston County Health District’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control (BCCC) program will be offering free mammograms for women who do not have any insurance including Medicare and Medicaid at the following locations.  Other services available include breast exams and pap smears for women 18-64 years of age.   Women must be a resident of Galveston County and meet income guidelines.  Call (409) 938-2291 to schedule an appointment or receive additional information.

Galveston Summer Musicals Offers Kids Three and Six Day Theater Camps from June 30 - Aug 16th

Galveston Summer Musicals is offering local and visiting children their Children's Stage Adventures Program which is a three day theater mini-camp beginning June 30, 2008.  Children will be taught live theater by the casts of this year's Galveston Summer Musicals' Cast.  

Classes will be offered June 30th - August 16th and participants may choose a Monday through Wednesday mini-camp, a Thursday through Satrday mini-camp or may combine the two for a six day mini-camp.

More than 50 sail boats will race on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico during Texas Race Week, July 24-26, 2008. This event will happen in Galveston for a second consecutive year, after a very successful return to Galveston in 2007. There will be one race each day, and the recommended places to watch the races are East Beach, Stewart Beach, or a few miles down the Seawall.

GALVESTON — Galveston public school district trustees on Wednesday will discuss hiring a new principal to lead Ball High School.

Principal Sandra Chapa stepped down after two years to become principal of Keller Middle School in North Texas.

Register Now for the Ball High School Cheer Kids Camp

The Ball High School Cheerleaders will host their annual Cheer Kids Camp for children ages 5 to 13 from 8:00am to noon, June 19th & June 20th in the Ball High School upper gym (4115 Avenue O, Galveston, TX).

All campers may participate in the Ball High School Homecoming Parade and pre-game Homecoming festivities.

Register now through Jun 13th.  Camp costs $75 per participant.  Registration at the door will cost $80.

Ball High School Public Comment Meeting About New Principal

The Galveston Independent School District will have a "Principal Profile" from 5:30 - 6:30pm on Thursday, May 22nd in the Ball High School Lecture Hall to get the community's views on the school's next principal.

GISD is currently conducting a nationwide search to replace Sandra Chapa, who is leaving to become principal of Keller Middle School.

Thursday's event will allow the community to get involved in the selection of the next principal.

Expanding Your Horizons in Math, Science & Tech - For Girls in Grades 6-8

Girls in grades 6 to 8 have an opportunity to learn about science, math and technology-related careers in hands-on workshops hosted this Saturday at UTMB. The “Expanding Your Horizons in Math, Science and Technology Conference” is May 17, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Allied Health Sciences and Nursing Building 11th and Mechanic streets; it’s open to girls in grades 6 to 8 living anywhere in the greater Galveston/Houston area. On-line registration will be available through May 15. The conference fee is $5 and some need-based scholarships are available.

Galveston County American Red Cross offers CPR & First Aid Classes in Texas City!

 

The Galveston County American Red Cross is offering Lay Responder CPR AED (automated external defibulator), and First Aid classes.  The  dates are as follows:
 

Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.at the Galveston office; and T uesday, May 27, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.at the Texas City office 

 

There will be a Babysitting class available for anyone 11 and up on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m at the Texas City office

The Harris L Kempner Sailing School is offering open registration all summer to youth interested in learning how to sail.  Sailing lessons are free and open to the public.  The school requires student and parent interviews prior to acceptance into the program.

FREE Mammograms Available


Galveston County and Cities – D’Feet Breast Cancer Inc. and the Galveston County Health District’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control (BCCC) program will be offering free mammograms for women who do not have any insurance including Medicare and Medicaid at the following locations. Other services available include breast exams and pap smears for women 18-64 years of age. Women must be a resident of Galveston County and meet income guidelines. Universal Access, Dual Credit Assistance Available for Summer 2008 Galveston College Classes

The Galveston College Universal Access free tuition program for local high school graduates will be available during the summer semesters to all 2998 Ball High School and O'Connell High School graduates, as well as students returning home from four year colleges and universities.

The Dual Credit Tuition Assistance Fund, a new project instituted by the Galveston College Foundation, will also aid rising high school juniors who need tuition assistance to take one course for college/high school dual credit.

Geo's Texas Tumblers Summer 2008 Programs


Geo's Texas Tumblers Summer 2008 Rgistration will start the week of April 28th - for all ages!


 
Classes are offered for ages 2 and up (to adult level). 

Summer registration will be $10.00.  Regristration will remain open through the summer and drop-ins are welcome.  Classes will be scheduled Monday thru Friday,  4:00pm - 8:00 pm and will normally last one hour classes.
 
Summer classes will begin the first week of June 2, 2008.  Classes offered consist of eight 1-hour sessions over a two week period.  Classes are $40.00.  Geo's offers a 15% sibling discount.
