      Hi Roni-

I am so very glad you left a note for me on my blog.  I have contacted some breast cancer screening resources and it appears that you have several low cost or free options.

      In San Antonio:

      1.
The County Indigent Heath Care Program provides a variety of health care services to eligible residents through the counties, hospital districts and public hospitals in Texas. Each county contact may be able to offer more information regarding specific eligibility criteria and services offered. Here is their contact information:

      2.    The Texas Breast and Cervical Cancer Services (BCCS) program is funded partly by CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) that helps low income, uninsured, and underserved women gain access to lifesaving screening programs for early detection of breast and cervical cancers. The BCCS program offers clinical breast exam (CBE), screening mammogram, pelvic exam, and Pap test. To qualify a woman must be low-income, uninsured, and age 18-64. Here is the contact information for this program:

      3.       Information about Getting Screened:  To find out if you qualify for a free or low-cost mammogram and Pap test and where to get screened in Texas, call:  1 (512) 458-7796

Program Information: CDC funding for a capacity-building program for breast and cervical cancer early detection began in 1991.

      For support:

The Susan B. Koman Foundation is always available to talk to you and answer and questions you may have: 1-877 GO KOMEN (1-877-465-6636) www.komen.org

The National Cancer Institute is also a FANTASTIC resource for you to find out about free or low cost screening/treatment options for all cancer and cancer screening: www.cancer.gov or call 1-800-4-CANCER.  They also have a live chat available through the computer from 9:00am – 11:00pm EST.  They are great and a HUGE help!

I will send additional information to you as I collect it.  While I live in Galveston, please let me know if there is anything else I might be able to do to support you.  I know the number one thing that most people who have undergone screening and sometimes treatment say is to try to stay as positive and optimistic as possible.  Give those kiddos a big hug and let them know there are lots of people out there that care about them, you and your entire family!

      Take care Roni!

      Erin Toberman
