From perfecting jump shots to improving zone defenses, members of the Legends of Basketball, Houston Chapter will teach children ages 6-16 the proper fundamentals of basketball. How Galveston Island Celebrates the Fourth of July

Free Summer Band Concert - Thursday, July 3rd

The Summer Band Concert will start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 3rd. Join the band at the Sealy Gazebo on 24th St. and Ave. I, across from Rosenberg Library, in Galveston. The Liberty Bell will be the theme for the patriotic program. The band will perform the Liberty Bell March written by John Philip Sousa, and children will be invited to join the band by striking the bell at the appropriate moments.

The evening’s program also includes a performance by the First Baptist Church’s choir; soloist Ms. Donna Heinrich will sing God Bless America and America the Beautiful; Martial Arts America, instructed by Ishmael Robles, will present a patriotic Karate demonstration; and John and Betty Lou Williams will be the color barriers displaying flags from the military forces.

The Galveston Beach Band directed by Frank G. Incaprera, will perform a variety of selections including a sing-along, Sousa marches, big band music and Broadway hits. The concert is free to the public.

Fourth of July Parade & Celebration - Friday, July 4th

Come Fourth and Participate in Galveston’s 4th of July Parade and Celebration. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Galveston Railroad Museum on 25th Street. It will head north winding its way through downtown, from Postoffice Street to 21st Street, north on 21st Street to Strand, then west on Strand to 25th Street. The parade is immediately followed by a celebration of our nation’s birth in the air-conditioned comfort of Galveston Railroad Museum, 123 25th Street.

The celebration will include musical entertainment by Sparky Koerner and a patriotic program hosted by Joe Huff of Galveston College. Hot dogs and other refreshments will also be provided. In addition to free admission to all the Museum’s exhibits, the Railroad Museum will also provide train rides (cost: $5.00) on their SP Diesel Switcher Locomotive!

Decorate your bicycle, tricycle, golf cart, skates, horses, wagons, carriages, floats, or any other favorite mode of transportation and join us in the parade! Participation in the parade is free and fun for the entire family! Annual Fireworks Display - Friday, July 4th

The Park Board of Trustees in conjunction with the City of Galveston will present the 4th of July Fireworks display on Friday, July 4th, at 9:15 p.m. (weather permitting). The fireworks will be presented at 37th and Seawall, and will last about 25 minutes.

Traffic Closures: The Seawall from 33rd to 45th streets will be closed from 7:30 pm until the end of the fireworks display. There will be no parking on Seawall Boulevard from 36th to 38th streets on either side of the street. There will also be no parking on Seawall Boulevard from 46th to 47th Streets on the south side, and from 32nd to 33rd Streets on the north side.

FREE Summer Camps for Galveston Kids! Camps Begin July 7th & 14th, 2008

Free Summer Hands-On Learning Camps

Galveston ISD, in partnership with Texas A&M at Galveston, the University of Texas Medical Branch, and the Dana Center at UT Austin, is sponsoring four innovative, hands-on summer learning camps in July. GISD will provide transportation from GISD campuses and housing areas north of Broadway. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. High school students can earn one Science Credit for UTMB and TAMUG camps.

• 5 seats remain for the Science Camp I at UTMB --- students must be entering 8th or 9th grade in the fall. (July 7 - Aug 1. 1 pm- 5 pm)

• 5 seats remain for the Science Camp II at UTMB --- students must be entering 10th or 11th grade in the fall. (July 7 - Aug 1. 8 am - noon)

• 30 seats remain for Hands on Math, including field trips and online activities (at Ball High) --- students must be entering 6th - 9th grade in the fall (July 7 - Aug 1, 8 am - 12:30 pm)

• 10 seats remain for Sea Camp at TAMUG - students must be entering 6th - 12th grade in the fall (July 14 - Aug 8, 8 am - noon)

Applications may be picked up at the Ball High Clock Tower desk or at the Central Support Center Administration Building on 39th Street.

Ball High School Has A New Principal For The 2008-2009 School Year

Blair to lead Ball High School

GALVESTON — The assistant principal at Angleton High School has been hired to lead Ball High School next year.

William Dean Blair, a high school principal for 12 years, has experience in boosting state standardized test scores. Every campus where he’s worked as an administrator has earned a recognized or exemplary rating by the Texas Education Agency.

“I am truly looking forward to this experience,” Blair told Galveston public school district trustees Wednesday night.

“I look forward to this challenge. If I didn’t think I could make a difference, I wouldn’t be here.”

Blair was picked by a committee from a pool of candidates and then interviewed by Superintendent Lynne Cleveland who recommended him to the board.

Beau Rawlins, a member of the search committee and sometimes critic of the district, praised the transparency of the principal search.

“We need to support this principal in every possible (way) from the start,” he said. “We need to put our differences behind us, move on and support your decision 100 percent.”

Blair replaces Sandra Chapa, who stepped down after two years as principal.

Blair, born and raised in Odessa, earned a bachelor’s degree in health/physical education from Texas A&M University in 1980 and his master’s degree from Texas Southern University in 1990.

He has taught math and coached at La Marque, Freeport and Brazosport before moving to Angleton.

Galveston County and Cities – D’Feet Breast Cancer Inc. and the Galveston County Health District’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control (BCCC) program will be offering free mammograms for women who do not have any insurance including Medicare and Medicaid at the following locations. Other services available include breast exams and pap smears for women 18-64 years of age. Women must be a resident of Galveston County and meet income guidelines. Swimming Lessons and Swim Teams on Galveston Island!

Parents have several choices on Galveston Island when it comes to teaching children and grandchildren how to swim.

The Galveston Health & Racquet Club

The Galveston Health and Racquet Club, located at 2318 83rd Street (next to Moody Gardens) is offering six sessions of Red Cross Certified swimming lessons. The classes meet daily, Monday - Thursday, weather permitting. Make up classes available Fridays. Red Cross certificates will be issued by the instructor to all swimmers at the completion of the course. Each class will consist of no less than 4 and no more than 7 swimmers.

Local mom, Elizabeth (Liz) Jansen, is now accepting summer registrations for private summer swimming lessons. Liz said that in her experience, the ideal swimming lesson program involves four 1/2 hour lessons per week for two weeks (eight 1/2 hour lessons total). However, Liz will work with you to accomodate your schedule. Liz charges by the 1/2 hour per child. One-on-one lessons are preferred but she will accommodate teaching two children at one time. Parents and grandparents will need to provide swimming pool. Galveston Island locations preferred please.

Do you want to keep your kids swimming all year long? The Galveston Island Swim Team is a year-round competitive USA swim team located on Galveston Island. GIST is a small but growing team. Swimmers from age 6 to 18 may try out. The team competes in swim meets one or two times a month in the greater Houston area. The parent run, non-profit team was founded in 1994 and practices 5 days a week. Practices are held at the Ball High Pool (Avenue P & 43rd street). Practice times vary depending on the swimmer's ability.

There are still openings available for local and visiting kids to attend Texas A&M Galveston's (TAMUG) Sea Camp and Sea Campus Kids Summer Camp Programs.

Sea Camp: Sea Camp is a week-long adventure for students ages 10 - 18 to explore the wonders of the marine and estuarine environments. As a Sea Camper, on the Galveston campus students will have access to TAMUG research vessels, oceanographic equipment, laboratory facilities, and a professional staff enabling students to learn about the ocean through first-hand on-the-water experiences. Sea Campers will reside in dormitories at the TAMUG Mitchell campus on Pelican Island. Campers are roomed two to a room and four to a suite. Roommate requests are available on forms sent after registration. A resident manager, dorm mom, recreation director, camp assistant and counselors (counselors are K-12 educators) are present 24 hours a day.

"HANDS-ON" & "FEET-IN" MARINE ADVENTURES
AGES 6-11

Sea Campus Kids is a marine science day program for students 6- 11 years old. Learning is accomplished through multi-sensory interactive experience. Students will have their hands-on and their feet-in as they wade through a salt-water marsh, visit a turtle hatchery, dissect a fish or seine the surf. Campers will also be engaged in asking questions, discovering answers, observing problems, and creating possible solutions. The marine science content of the sessions will be monitored by a university marine biologist. Classes will be taught by teams of educators and marine science specialists.

Sharks, Stingrays, and Crabs - Discover the diversity of crabs and cartilaginous fishes (sharks, rays, and skates) and design your own species and its habitat. Seine in the surf and search for sharks’ teeth at the beach. Try to catch cantankerous blue crabs. Compare bony fish anatomy to the anatomy of a shark during dissections, a slimy hands-on experience. Beach field trips. Fish dissections.

Marine Mammals - Enter the wonderful world of marine mammals, our hairy ocean friends & learn about flukes & flippers, baleen & blowholes, spy hopping & breaching. Compare dolphins & porpoises, seals & sea lions. Take a “close” look at the largest mammal on Earth, study the only aquatic bear, and get to know the clever sea otter. It's a Pirate's Life! NEW! - Ahoy me haarrty! Take a look back at the lives and times of pirates. Learn how they lived and how they navigated the ocean blue. Find out about Galveston's own legendary pirate, Jean Lafitte. Use a map and compass to discover the location of buried 'treasure' and how to create a map to your own hidden booty. Discover how scientists recover artifacts from sunken ships. Nautical archaeology and nautical science are major topics. This workshop includes a field trip to the Texas Seaport Museum and to the beach in search of buried treasure.

Water Rocks and Waves Roll! - Discover the vast features of our amazing blue suede planet. Rockin’ “feet in” field studies and “hands on” investigations will be conducted to explore the geology, chemistry and physics of marine environments.   Twist and shout as you design a submarine, survey the ocean floor to discover how Tsunamis and volcanoes form and investigate what happens when water meets land. Hurricanes, tides and currents are just the tip of the iceberg in this workshop. Beach and marsh field trips.

Water Rocks and Waves Roll! Schedule: 7/7/08 - 7/9/08, from 9 am - 3 pm $125

Sharks, Sharks, and More Sharks - Advanced workshop for shark fans ages 9-11. Encounter myth and fact in this in-depth examination of the most fascinating and misunderstood fish in the ocean. The study will look at the anatomy, habitat, and eating habits of lots and lots of sharks: big sharks, little sharks, blue sharks, megamouth sharks and Ornate Wobbegones, Prehistoric sharks and sharks living in our very own bay. Pick your favorite shark and use our campus resources to do a comprehensive study. Beach field trip and shark dissection.

The Ins & Outs of Invertebrates - Advanced workshop for ages 9-11. Investigate the incredible world of marine invertebrates (our spineless but not gutless ocean friend). Bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, crustaceans, and more will be examined in this workshop. Observe the mysterious world of the oyster community, taste and chart your favorite appetizing invertebrate (provided by Gaido's Restaurant), and write with real squid ink. This clammy workshop entails mollusk dissections, beach and salt marsh field trips, and a wacky eight - legged octopus race.

The Ins and Outs of Invertebrates Schedule: 7/14/08 - 7/18/08, from 12 pm - 3 pm $110

Grand Sand and Swell Shells - Study marine life fossils and the stories they reveal of ancient oceans. Experiment with potato chips to discover what makes one shell stronger than another. Beachcombers will delight in this collecting workshop for junior naturalists. Beach field trips.

Grand Sand and Swell Shells Schedule: 7/21/08 - 7/25/08, from 12 pm - 3 pm $110

Plankton, Nekton, and Benthos - Ocean lifestyles involve drifting (plankton), swimming (nekton), and hanging on or digging in (benthos). Trek along the beach and venture into the marsh to find living specimens of all three categories. Drag a bag seine and a plankton net. Dig for polychaetes and coquina clams. Eat “mud” and “worms” to learn about statistical samples and get greasy to find out how blubber works. Octopus, fish, whales and snails are all part of this workshop. Beach and salt marsh trips. Dissection of fish and mollusks.

Ocean Artists - Link science and the arts while you sing songs and tell tales of oceangoing people, from whalers and pirates to whale scientists and nautical archaeologists. An orientation meeting for seamanship training on the restored 1877 ELISSA, the Official Tall Ship of Texas, is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 1:30 to 5 p.m., dockside at the Texas Seaport Museum in Galveston, at 22nd and Harborside Drive. Houston-Galveston-area residents will have the rare opportunity to learn to sail and maintain a square-rigged sailing ship this summer and fall, and to take her into the Gulf of Mexico next spring. They will learn skills and even a vocabulary passed down from the days of the fictional Caribbean pirate, Jack Sparrow.

During the orientation, participants will get information on the Seamanship Training Program and a tour of the ship, which was restored here in 1982 and has sailed every year since then. Following a film presentation on the history of the ship and a discussion of just what is involved in joining the crew, experienced crewmembers will demonstrate maintenance projects and sail handling.

John Schaumburg, waterfront manager for the Texas Seaport Museum (TSM), said that attending the orientation does not obligate a person to join the program, which is free of charge, and stresses that ELISSA and TSM offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for those whose schedules do not permit them to complete the full seamanship training program.

ELISSA was never a pirate ship, but as a British cargo ship of the 19th century, she specialized in calling at smaller ports of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. She twice loaded cotton at Galveston. It was this local connection, and the authenticity of her iron hull, that led Galveston Historical Foundation to purchase the vessel, then a cut-down motorship, and undertake her restoration. Today, ELISSA is one of only three pre-20th century sailing vessels in the United States that have been restored to full sailing capacity.

“Volunteers were essential to the initial restoration,” said Schaumburg, “and they have remained essential to her continuing life over the last 25 years.”

ELISSA has been designated by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark. She was named the “Official Tall Ship of Texas” in a resolution signed by Governor Rick Perry in June, 2005.

ELISSA sails several times every year. Every spring, she goes out for a series of day sails over the course of a two-week period. Those who participate in the seamanship training program, which includes maintenance tasks such as chipping rust, painting and tarring the rig, have the opportunity to learn ancient skills and techniques. After completing the classes, which take place on designated Saturdays, and contributing the required hours of work on the ship’s upkeep, participants are eligible to take ELISSA to sea.

Volunteers who are able may learn to climb ELISSA’s rigging to set and furl sails and maintain the intricate machinery of wood, wire and rope. These tasks require skill and bravery, as the ship’s main mast towers 99 feet above deck.

“Our seamanship program is the only one of its kind in the United States,” says Schaumburg. “It is the only program in which an all-volunteer crew is fully prepared and given the opportunity to operate the ship.”

Don't miss all the weekend fun as East Beach celebrates summer with the 93Q Mullet Toss Competition, Saturday, July 26, 2008.

A mullet is one of the more popular and plentiful fish indigenous to this area. It is the only fish with a gizzard and is said to possess mystical properties. A Mullet Toss consist of individuals on the beach throwing a mullet, from within a 10-foot circle. Not to mention a great excuse to throw a party with lots of fun activities, great music, a home made bikini contest and food!

GALVESTON — Galveston public school district trustees on Wednesday will discuss hiring a new principal to lead Ball High School.

Principal Sandra Chapa stepped down after two years to become principal of Keller Middle School in North Texas.

After a nationwide search, a committee narrowed the pool of candidates to three, said Superintendent Lynne Cleveland. She picked two of the three. Committee members visited the candidates’ schools to interview their co-workers, Cleveland said.

Both candidates have experience as high school principals, one of the qualifications that Cleveland said she valued. The new principal will earn $110,000 to $115,000.

Aside from discussing the high school principal’s job, trustees will meet behind closed doors to talk about a new principal for Rosenberg Elementary School, a new coordinator for the bilingual programs, a new coordinator of career and technology education and resolving a personnel matter concerning Rick Tullis, the district’s testing coordinator.

In its first steps to trim administrative expenses, trustees proposed cutting Tullis’ job. To do so, it declared financial exigency, meaning it can’t afford all the people on its payroll.

Financial exigency allows districts to cut jobs even if those employees did nothing wrong. Tullis has submitted his notice to retire, which trustees will consider Wednesday.

After 16 Successful Years, Broadway Bound Closes It's Doors

I was surprised when I heard the news this weekend that Broadway Bound has closed it's doors. Broadway Bound has been one of the local youth focused organizations that parents have raved about. I know I am saddened as my son, who is 3 1/2, did not have an opportunity to participate in one of their well regarded programs.

We all wish JK & Andre'e best wishes as they expand their own family and pursue other creative dreams!

Dear Students, Parents and Broadway Bound
Supporters,

After much thought and careful consideration for all
involved, we have decided to close Broadway Bound
School of Performing Arts. We have had sixteen
wonderful years, in Galveston. We know that is time
to end our run, and on a high note - no less, after our
wonderful season.

This decision did not come lightly, but we feel
confident that we are making the right one. With my
own child on the way in the fall, I will have my focus
elsewhere. In addition, JK and I want to pursue writing
shows, for both youth and adults.

Some of you we have known for just a semester, some
for over ten years. We will always carry with us fond
memories of the shows we have produced and the
lives we have touched.

It is our sincere hope that you and your families will
continue to support the arts in your neighborhood with

Island Skate Park Opens to Huge Crowds

Galveston, Texas - June 17, 2008

As City staff opened the gates to the municipal skate park yesterday a crowd of anxiously awaiting kids, families, and adults poured in. Hundreds of people turned out for the dedication festivities, which included music, skating demonstrations, and refreshments.

Following remarks from Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas, City Manager Steve LeBlanc, Parks Director Barbara Sanderson, and community supporter Rhonda Gregg, a talented group of sponsored skaters raced through the bowl complex igniting a series of whoops and applause from the crowd.

Skaters from across the Island, and from as far away as Houston, converged at the park Monday evening for its long-awaited opening. The City officially broke ground on the skate park in January of this year, but community support for the project originated more than seven years ago. Following a previous City Council’s decision to pass an ordinance banning skateboarding, local enthusiasts organized and began a grassroots campaign to raise money for a park. Eight years later, the skaters finally have a place to call home.

Grindline, an internationally known firm that is dedicated to state-of-the-art skate park design and construction, was awarded the $285,439.50 contract in December 2007. Park funding ultimately included many cash and in-kind donations, in addition to the City’s donation of land for the site and Community Development Block Grant money. The City wishes to extend a special thank you to all of the generous project partners and supporters.
